SSH Monitoring Tool for Linux Servers: Agentless Setup

Check Linux CPU, memory, disk and network over SSH. Start with a terminal check, then use a macOS or Windows desktop app to keep metrics and server terminals together.

Updated · shellivo

An SSH monitoring tool reads system metrics through an existing SSH connection, without installing a monitoring agent on the server. Use it for interactive Linux server checks from your desktop. You still need working SSH access; monitoring stops when your computer sleeps or the app disconnects.

Check three connection requirements

  • Confirm that the SSH host and port are reachable, including any required VPN or jump-host path.
  • Use an authorized username and password or private key; verify the host fingerprint on first connection.
  • The SSH user must be able to read Linux metrics; resolve missing permissions or commands before interpreting gaps as zero.

How do you check a VPS without installing an agent?

The hosting provider does not change the basic workflow: confirm SSH reachability from your computer, sign in with an existing account, read the metrics exposed by the remote system and open a terminal when needed. Provider dashboards may use different sampling times and definitions.

Agentless means no additional resident collector on the remote host. Your computer still needs an SSH client or desktop tool. Monitoring after the desktop app closes, retained history and alerting require a separately running monitoring service.

Verify access in a terminal first

In a local terminal with SSH available, replace the example username and host with your own. After connecting, uptime shows uptime and load averages; free -h summarizes memory, and df -h shows filesystem usage. These Linux commands install no software and change no server configuration. A load average is not a CPU percentage; compare repeated samples when investigating a trend.

ssh -p 22 [email protected]
# Run these on the remote Linux server after connecting:
uptime
free -h
df -h

What can a sample tell you?

CPU, memory, disk and network describe different resources. A single read is a point-in-time value or cumulative counter; rates and interval CPU utilization require successive samples.

SSH sessions and query commands consume resources. Having no additional agent does not imply zero CPU, memory or network cost; installation architecture alone is not a performance benchmark.

Keep metrics and a terminal in one desktop workflow

shellivo reads Linux status over SSH from your computer and provides an interactive terminal for connected hosts. Inspect a resource issue, then run your own diagnostic commands on that host. Real connections originate in the desktop app; the website workspace is a demo.

The desktop app runs on macOS and Windows; the CPU, memory, disk, network and process metrics described here are collected from remote Linux hosts. SSH connectivity to another operating system does not mean it exposes the same Linux metrics.

  1. Choose the download for your computer: macOS Apple Silicon or Intel, or Windows x64 or ARM64.
  2. Open shellivo in guest mode, add your authorized SSH host, port and username, then provide the password or private key. Verify the host fingerprint before accepting the connection.
  3. Connect the host, check its resource readings and open its terminal when you need to investigate. Guest mode supports one connected server; check the product page for multi-server plans.

Questions

Does agentless mean configuration-free?

No. You still need network access, valid SSH authentication and read permissions.

Does desktop monitoring continue while my computer sleeps?

Do not rely on a sleeping or closed desktop app to keep collecting. Use an independently running monitoring service for that requirement.

Does SSH monitoring always require root?

Do not assume root is required. First verify that an authorized regular account can read the needed commands and metrics. Hardening, /proc mount options and file permissions may restrict results. Do not expand account permissions just to fill a dashboard.

Can I monitor a Linux server from Windows or macOS?

Yes. shellivo provides macOS and Windows desktop downloads. The app connects over SSH to read Linux server metrics. Choose the package for your local operating system and chip; the monitored server does not need the desktop app installed.
